The Berlin barrel organ also called Leierkasten or less known reed organ, is a mechanical musical instrument. By turning a crank of the organ grinder man/woman, music is produced inside the instrument. Since the 18th century, the barrel organ has been known as the instrument of street musicians and jugglers at fairs. Many street musicians or jugglers used to carry a small capuchin monkey with them to attract even more attention. Today this monkey is replaced by a stuffed animal. The barrel organ was also used in churches.
